The Research Institute has  a number of on-going research projects funded by Chinese government funding  bodies, a list of representative projects is given below:
        
            - Video summarization via semantics-based learning in  multi-kernel one-class SVMs, funded by Chinese Natural Science Foundation. The  project is to develop a number of leading edge video summarization algorithms  along the directions of: (i) multiple kernel OC-SVM learning algorithm towards  video content adaptive semantics extraction and classification; (ii) semantics  extraction via pattern recognition approaches; and (iii) low-level video  processing via integration of features and fusion. 
- Immersive 3D video reconstruction of live events, funded by  Beijing WoRui Entrepreneurship Ltd. The project is to develop panoramic 3D  immersive video technologies to reconstruct performance shows and hence people  can have a new viewing experience as if he or she is present at the spot.  Specific research directions include: (i) panoramic 3D video registration and  stitching; (ii) video object segmentation and conversion of graphics-based  objects; (iii) new view video regeneration via in-painting and integration of  multi-view video streams; (iv) build-up of panoramic 3D immersive video capture  and playback platform.
- Video-based localization via vision descriptors, funded by  Shenzhen Science Foundation. The project is to research on extraction and  reconstruction of vision descriptors from surveillance videos and hence develop  a new algorithm for computerized object identification, detection and  recognitions. Research directions include: (i) video object tracking; (ii)  video object detection and identification; (iii) object-based video content  search; and (iv) vision-based descriptor construction, modelling and  extractions.
- Add-on video compression via sparse-based video  super-resolutions, funded by Chinese Aviation Research Academy. The  project is to develop an add-on  video compression technique based on adaptive down-sampling scheme and  sparse-based video super-resolution technology. Such an add-on video  compression can work with any  existing video compression standard and achieve additional video compression  without compromise on its decoding quality. Specific research can be highlighted as: (i) temporal video  segmentation to cut the input video stream into a number of V-units, in which  the motion and the content remains relatively consistent; (ii) spatial  decomposition to divide each frame into regions via quad-tree in accordance  with the smoothness of texture inside each region; and (iii) adaptive  down-sampling to reduce the image resolution and formulate the decomposed  videos for any existing video compression technique. At the decoding end, an  optimized image super-resolution algorithm is proposed to reconstruct the  decomposed and down-sampled video frames, to which two stages of pruning are  applied in order to select the closest correlated images for construction of an  over-complete dictionary and drive the sparse representation of its enlarged  frame. 
While working at universities in the United Kingdom  as a full professor in media computing, Professor J Jiang is a principal  investigator for the following externally funded projects:
